Agenda
Difficult Heritage
Now that the 2022-23 students have (almost) finished their Master studies, it’s time to think about the future and celebrate. To meet both ends, we invite all current students and alumni to participate in this event on ‘difficult heritage’ – such as the object formerly known as ‘Smoking N**’ in Museum Speelklok. Join and learn what knowledge and skills (almost) graduated cultural historians bring to future jobs!
13.15 Welcome, by Pieter Huistra & Marijke Huisman
13.25 Reflection in groups: how did you engage with difficult heritage during your studies (courses, internship, thesis) and/or job, and how is this relevant for your career?
14.00 Difficult heritage in Museum Speelklok
Claire McGinn (curator) & Nina Montijn (educator; alumna Ma Cultural History)
A few years ago Museum Speelklok received criticism from visitors. They denounced colonial and racist traces in music machines on display. That was the start of a transformation process. Museum Speelklok investigates what traces the past of colonialism and slavery have left in the collection, and formulates new policies to make ideas about diversity and inclusion concrete. That process is still ongoing. The Museum currently has a number of questions for which it would like your input!
